Facts About Cape Verde

The Republic of Cape Verde is located off the western coast of Africa. It is made up of 10 main islands and 8 islets. The northern island group is known as Barlavento and includes Santo Antao, Sao Vicente, Santa Luzia, Sao Nicolau, Sal and Boa Vista. The southern island group is named Sotavento and includes Maio, Santiago, Fogo and Brava.

Santa Luzia and the five islets are uninhabited. While Fogo is the only island to contain an active volcano, all the islands are considered volcanic.

The islands first appeared in history when the Portuguese landed in 1460 and claimed them. It started as a watering station and then developed into a sugar cane plantation. Later, it would become an important center for the slave trade out of Africa.

Cape Verde achieved independence in 1975 after an armed struggle with Portugal. The first democratic elections were held in 1991.

The islands have few natural resources and are often plagued by droughts. The service industry accounts for most of Cape Verde’s GDP. Their economy has been growing since the 1990s, however, and there has been much cooperation with the government of Portugal.

The original currency on the island was the Portuguese escudo. In 1999, the official currency was changed to the euro.

Inhabitants of Cape Verda are made up of a wide range of ethnic backgrounds. Most are either European in origin or Sub-Saharan Africans. There are also Jews, Arabs and Chinese.

Christianity is the primary religion, and Catholicism accounts for 90% of the population. Protestants are also present, as are Muslims and Buddhists.

Portuguese is the official language of the islands, but Cape Verdean Creole is used frequently in everyday life.
