Republic of Congo GamblingCongolese Republic Gambling LawsThere is no legal gambling in the Republic of the Congo. Republic of the Congo InformationThe Republic of the Congo is also known as Congo-Brazzaville or simply the Congo. Located in Central Africa, it is bordered by Gabon, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the province of Cabinda. A former French colony, the Republic of the Congo gained its independence in 1960. For twenty-five years, it was a Marxist state, but it became a multi-party democracy in 1992. In 1997, a civil war resulted in Marxist President Denis Sassou Nguesso being restored to leadership. The Republic of the Congo is divided into 10 regions. The capital of Brazzaville is designated as an independent commune. The regions are: - Bouenza The country’s economy is based around petroleum, agriculture and handicrafts. Natural gas and diamonds have also become major exports in recent years. Most of the Congo’s population is located in the southwestern section of the country, with large areas of jungle uninhabited. Eighty-five percent of the population lives in urban areas, with the cities of Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville being the largest. Europeans and other non-Africans live in the Congo, but their numbers have dwindled since the civil war in 1997. There are currently estimated to be 9,500 remaining. The official language of the country is French, with the French franc also being the official currency. Other languages include Lingala and Monokutuba. Christianity is the dominant religion, with animist beliefs a close second. A small percentage follows the Islamic faith. |
