Casino gambling is legal in Djibouti, but it is unknown if any other form of legal gambling is allowed. It is, however, unlikely, as the majority of the country follows Islam, which forbids activities such as gambling and drinking alcohol.

Djibouti Information

Located in the eastern section of Africa, The Republic of Djibouti is bordered by Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. The capital is the city of Djibouti, and over two-thirds of the country’s population live there, with the rest being mostly nomadic herders. The country is slightly smaller than the state of Massachusetts.

In 1977, Djibouti gained its independence from France. Prior to this, the country had been known as the French overseas territory of Afars and Issas, as well as French Somaliland. The country suffered through a civil war in the early 1990s due to unrest among the Afars minority. The war lasted until 2001. Since that time, Djibouti has had a number of democratic presidential elections.

The country still has close ties with France, as they have a military presence in Djibouti. They also maintain a strong relationship with the United States and host the only U.S. military base in sub-Saharan Africa.

Due to a lack of rainfall, most food has to be imported into Djibouti. The nation is heavily reliant on other countries, and Djibouti has a 40 to 50% unemployment rate. Their few exports take the form of hides, skins and coffee.

The population of Djibouti is estimated to be 444,440. The nation’s two major ethnic groups are the Issas and Afar. Other ethnic groups include Europeans, Arabs and Ethiopians.

French and Arabic are the official languages. Somali and Afar are also widely spoken. The nation’s official currency is the Djiboutian franc.

The country’s main religion is Islam, and every town and village has a mosque. Around 94% of the population follows Islam, while the rest adhere to the beliefs of Christianity.
