Estonia InformationEstonia is the northernmost Baltic Republic, along with Latvia and Lithuania. Estonia faces Finland from the south side of the Gulf of Finland. Tallinn (also known as Talinn or Reval) is the capital of Estonia. Estonia is near the major Russian city of St. Petersburg. Estonia itself has a long and sometimes tragic interaction with its large neighbor, Russia. Estonians are a Finnic people closely related to the nearby Finnish peoples. In the Viking Age, Estonia was mentioned as a pirate base. The country was not Christianized until relatively late by European standards, not being converted until the Northern Crusades of the 13th century, when Germanic knights conquered the land. The Kingdom of Denmark also collected portions of Estonia in the 13th centyr, and Estonia was firmly tied to the Denmark and the Livonian Brothers of the Sword, the German knights, but the mid 14th century. Estonia had joined the Hanseatic league, a trading alliance of uniquely medieval merchant guilds, in the late 13th century. The Estonians would try to throw off German rule in the 14th century, but this failed. Russians invaded Estonia in both the 15th and 16th centuries, but these attempted conquests also failed. The Kingdom of Sweden began its rise to power in the Reformation Age. Sweden would seize Estonia in the Livonian War in 1561, dividing the country between Estonia in the north and Livonia in the south. This distinction would remain until the end of World War I. For a time, the Polish kingdom ruled the southern half of Estonia. Sweden would add this half to their domain in 1625. The Swedish king established reforms in Estonia which helped the peasantry, so that Sweden's rule is considered a good era in Estonian history. Sweden reached the height of its prestige in the 30 Years War of 1618-1648, but its time as a European power would be brief. Sweden lost a major war to the Russian under Peter the Great. The Great Northern War from 1700 to 1721 saw Sweden gain early successes, only to lose to the greater resources and resolve of Peter the Great. Tsar Peter added Estonia to the Russian Empire. To cement his control over the Baltic coast and to open a door to Europe, he built St. Petersburg on the Baltic coast near Estonia. Tsarist Russia would maintain in control for the next two centuries, until the end of World War I. They fought the Estonian Liberation War from 1918 until 1920 to gain freedom from the Soviet Union's control, sometimes with the help of German Freikorps volunteers. This freedom would be short-lived. Just prior to the outbreak of hostilities in 1939, Hitler and Stalin signed the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact. In a secret protocol of the pact, Hitler renounced Germany's traditional interest in the Baltic States, essentially ceding Estonia and other Baltic states to the Soviets. This led to the Soviet Union's invasion of Estonia in 1940, which Estonians were powerless to stop. Estonia would become part of the Soviet Union as Estonia SSR. From the summer of 1941 until the fall of 1944, the German wermacht occupied Estonia. Hitler broke his pact with Stalin and invaded the Soviet Union with a 3,000,000-man army. The Nazi occupation was originally viewed as a liberation, but the Estonians soon learned the Germans were just another occupying power. Germany rounded up Estonian partisans and killed many Jews in Estonia. The Red Army returned to Estonia in 1944, and Stalin had tens of thousands of Estonians shipped to his gulags in Siberia. Thousands of Estonians actually fled the land with the retreating German forces. Estonia would remain an unwilling province of the Soviet Union until 1989. The Soviets made many attempts to Russify the Estonian people. Russification attempts did not work as the Soviets hoped, for the Estonians regained their country following the events of the Singing Revolution of 1989 and formal declaration of independence in 1991. The declaration of independence came during the tumultuous events of a late-August Soviet coup in Moscow, where Gorbachev was taken prisoner by Soviet hardliners and Yeltsin led resistance to the coup. In such events, the Soviets were unwilling or unable to stop the Baltic Republics from declaring independence. Since 1991, Estonia has tried to retain its independence of Russia, which has not always been so easy. Estonia became a member of NATO and the European Union in two seperate developments in 2004. Estonia has also established close ties with Sweden and Finland in the years since independence, and Estonian leaders have gone so far as to publicly identify their country as "Nordic". Russia appears to remain somewhat un-reconciled to the independence of Baltic States like Estonia. Economic pressures have been exerted on Estonia, which once relied on the Russia for 92% of its international trade. In 2007, Estonia charged the Russian military with cyberattacks on their nation, which left much of Estonia's internet infrastructure overwhelmed. The cyber assault came at the height of a diplomatic crisis, where the Russian government expressed anger over the Estonian government's desire to remove or relocate Soviet memorials to fallen soldiers from World War II, due to the Estonians' ambivalence about their role in the Soviet Union. Many Estonian banking, government and media sites were spammed, so that a large percentage of Estonia's internet sites crashed. Since that time, Estonia has worked with NATO on defenses against such e-incursions, and Estonia has established its E-Military. |
