It is also unclear what reasons might be behind such a ban. Gabonaise InformationThe Gabonese Republic is located in Africa and borders Cameroon, the Republic of the Congo and Equatorial Guinea. The capital of the country is located in the city of Libreville. Gabon is split into nine provinces. They are: - Estuaire The first Europeans arrived in Gabon in the 15th century. One of the first European missions to the country was led by Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza in 1875. He would go on to become colonial governor and found the town of Franceville. France officially occupied the nation in 1885. Gabon became one of the territories of French Equatorial Africa in 1910. This federation lasted until 1959. On August 17th, 1960, Gabon achieved their independence from France, and the first president of the country was elected in 1961. The current president, Omar Bongo Ondimba, has been in office since 1967 (winning all elections by a wide majority). In 2007, it was announced that Gabon had abolished the death penalty. Prior to this, it had not been applied in over a decade. Gabon has a per capita income which is four times higher than most countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Much of this prosperity is due to offshore oil, and Gabon was a member of OPEC from 1975 until 1995. Other natural resources include wood, iron, magnesium and uranium. With a population of 1.5 million, Gabon is comprised primarily of those of Bantu origin. There are, however, over 40 ethnic groups spread across the country, with the largest being either the Fang or the Bandjabi. Other groups include the Okande, Bapounou, Eshira, Bakota and Myene. The official language is French, with over 80% of the population being able to speak the language. Over 10,000 former French citizens make their home in Gabon. Christianity is the dominant religion, with Roman Catholicism being the most popular. Animists and Muslims can also be found, as well as those who practice indigenous African religions. |
