Gambling is legal in Guadeloupe. This mostly takes the form of casino gambling, as well as local events such as cockfighting and oxen pulls.

Casinos in Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe currently has two casinos in operation. They are:

- Casino de Gosier (43 Pointe de la Verdure, Gosier, Grande-Terre, Guadeloupe) Open from noon until 3am on Tuesday thru Sunday (closed Monday). This casino offers 115 gaming machines and nine table and poker games (including blackjack). A restaurant and 200-room hotel are also located on the premises.

The accepted currencies at Casino de Gosier are the French franc and the euro, and a casual elegant dress code is enforced (no shorts). A 60 franc entrance fee is charged, and French is spoken throughout the casino. You must be 21 to play any casino games. For more information, call +590 847 96 8.

- Casino de la Marina (Avenue de l’Europe, Saint Francois, Grand-Terre, Guadeloupe) Open daily from 3pm until 3am, this casino has 49 gaming machines and five table games (Baccarat, Blackjack, Chemin de Fer, Craps and Roulette). French francs and the euro are accepted as currency, and a casual elegant dress code is enforced. An entrance fee of 60 francs is charged, and the minimum age to play any games is 21. Cockfighting in Guadeloupe

Cockfighting is in season from November through April. Usually held on Sundays, cockfights draw large crowds, and a great deal of wagering takes place. To enter the cock pits, one may expect to pay a nominal fee. On tourist maps of the island, cock fighting pits are often marked.

Oxen Pulls in Guadeloupe

Oxen pulls are held on Sundays in Guadeloupe. Harnessed in pairs, the oxen must pull weights determined by their category (often between 1300 and 1700 kilos). Races are timed, and drivers must be careful to not stray from the designated course. Drivers are also prohibited from using their whip more than 12 times during the course of a race.

Many of these animals are trained like professional athletes, with some receiving massages and swimming in the ocean. As you may have guessed, a lot of money can change hands during these races.

Guadeloupe Information

Guadeloupe is a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea. It is considered an overseas department of France and has a land area of 629 square miles. Being part of France, Guadeloupe is also considered part of the European Union. The capital of the country is Basse-Terre, and the official currency is the euro.

Guadeloupe is made up of five islands. They are:

- Basse-Terre
- Grande-Terre
- La Desirade
- Les Saintes
- Marie-Galante

While the country depends on France for imports and subsidies, it also generates revue through tourism, agriculture, light industry and services. Over 80 percent of tourists come from France, with smaller amounts coming from the rest of Europe, the United States, Canada and South America.

Sugarcane is an important export crop, as are eggplant, noni, sapotilla, paroka, yams, gourds, plantains, pomegranates and jackfruits. Light industry centers around solar energy, sugar and rum.

Most banks are open for currency exchange from 8am until noon and 2pm until 4pm on Monday thru Friday. Banks are also open on Saturday mornings. To convert foreign currency, you are usually required to show a passport and airplane ticket. Banks are available in all major towns, and most of them have ATM machines. However, cards issued in the United States may not be compatible.

The largest ethnic groups in Guadeloupe is comprised of Blacks or Mulattos (74%). Other groups include: White, Indian, Lebanese, Syrian and Chinese.

The nation is predominantly Roman Catholic (91%). Other religions include Protestant, Hindu/African and Jehovah’s Witnesses.

The nation’s official language is French. The Creole language is also widely spoken throughout the islands.
