Usually held on Sundays, cockfights draw large crowds, and a great deal of wagering takes place. To enter the cock pits, one may expect to pay a nominal fee. On tourist maps of the island, cock fighting pits are often marked. Oxen Pulls in GuadeloupeOxen pulls are held on Sundays in Guadeloupe. Harnessed in pairs, the oxen must pull weights determined by their category (often between 1300 and 1700 kilos). Races are timed, and drivers must be careful to not stray from the designated course. Drivers are also prohibited from using their whip more than 12 times during the course of a race. Many of these animals are trained like professional athletes, with some receiving massages and swimming in the ocean. As you may have guessed, a lot of money can change hands during these races. Guadeloupe InformationGuadeloupe is a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea. It is considered an overseas department of France and has a land area of 629 square miles. However, cards issued in the United States may not be compatible. The largest ethnic groups in Guadeloupe is comprised of Blacks or Mulattos (74%). Other groups include: White, Indian, Lebanese, Syrian and Chinese. The nation is predominantly Roman Catholic (91%). Other religions include Protestant, Hindu/African and Jehovah’s Witnesses. The nation’s official language is French. The Creole language is also widely spoken throughout the islands. |
