Straddling the equator, it is made up of 32 atolls and a raised coral island (Banaba). Kiribati is part of the Gilbert Islands chain and became a member of the United Nations in 1999. The island’s capital is Tarawa. Most of the population live in villages ranging from 50 to 3,000 inhabitants. Houses are often constructed from materials obtained from coconut and pandanus trees, and locals survive primarily by fishing. Other residents are employed by various copra plantations. Kiribati islands include: - Banaba - Located between the Gilbert Islands and
Nauru. Kiribati has close relations with New Zealand, Japan and Australia, and they provide most of the country’s foreign aid. Japan and Taiwan also have licenses to fish in the waters off of Kiribati. Since Kiribati has few natural resources, its economy depends mainly on foreign financial aid, tourism and agriculture. Fishing licenses, external grants and seaman’s remittances also contribute to the economy of the island nation. The major religion of Kiribati is Christianity, having been introduced to the islands by missionaries in the 19th century. While some are Congregationalist Protestant, the majority of the island is Roman Catholic. Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses can also be found scattered throughout the island chain. |
