Gambling Laws in Kuwait

There is no legal gambling in Kuwait. This is due to 85% of the population practicing Islam, a religion which expressly forbids gambling.

Facts About Kuwait

Located on the coast of the Persian Gulf, the State of Kuwait is bordered by Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Made up mostly of desert, Kuwait also has nine islands. They are:

- Auhah Island
- Bubiyan Island
- Failaka Island
- Kubbar Island
- Miskan Island
- Qaruh Island
- Umm al Maradim Island
- Umm an Namil Island
- Warbah Island

The largest of these islands is Bubiyan, which is connected to the mainland of Kuwait by a bridge. Since 1991, this island has served as a military base which is restricted to civilians.

The nation of Kuwait is separated into six governorates. They are:

- Al Ahmadi
- Al Farwanivah
- Al Asimah
- Al Jahra
- Hawalli
- Mubarak Al-Kabeer

Major cities in Kuwait include Salmiva, Hawalli, Shuwaikh, Jahrah and the capital of Kuwait City.

The major industries in Kuwait are petroleum and petrochemicals. They account for 80% of the government’s income and nearly half of the GDP. Construction, shipping and financial services are also important industries. The nation’s major trading partners include the United States, Japan, China, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Singapore, India and the United Kingdom.

The official currency of the country is the Kuwaiti dinar, which is issued by the Central Bank of Kuwait. As of this writing, it is the highest valued unit of currency in the world.

The population is estimated to be near 3.5 million, with 2 million of these being non-nationals. 85% of the population practices Islam, but Christians, Sikhs, Hindus and Buddhists are also present.

Before 2005, only 15% of Kuwaiti citizens were allowed to vote. Members of the armed forces, women and those with less than thirty years of citizenship were excluded. Women were granted the right to vote in 2005. Despite these advances, however, Kuwait still restricts freedom of speech and has been known to jail citizens and journalists who criticize the government or its policies.

By 1953, Kuwait had become the largest exporter of oil in the Persian Gulf. They achieved independence on June 19th, 1961. Iraq claimed that Kuwait was a part of its domain and threatened to invade, but the Arab League and Britain intervened and kept the peace.

During the Iraq-Iran War, Kuwait sided with Iraq. The war ended in 1988, and Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990. Thirty-four nations formed a coalition to drive Iraq from the country, and they were successful after six weeks of fighting. During this time, Iraqi forces set fire to Kuwaiti oil wells and released oil into the Persian Gulf. The total cost of damages from these actions were estimated to be in excess of $5.12 billion.
