Micronesia GamblingMicronesian Gambling LawsNo organized form of gambling exists in the Federated States of Micronesia. In fact, a number of the islands have laws against gambling. Because Micronesia is a collected of federated sovereign states with no central government, no one law regulates gambling throughout the Federated States of Micronesia. The idea of legalized gambling has been brought up many times by the Micronesian governments. In 1983, for example, investors proposed the idea of offshore gambling on the island of Pohnpei. Years later, a British and Australian investment group showed interest in establishing a gambling resort on Lukop, Madolenihmw. However, Pohnpei law makes gambling on the island illegal, and the proposed casino was never constructed. Federated States of Micronesia FactsThe Federated States of Micronesia are located in the Pacific Ocean, northeast of the nation of Papua New Guinea. Micronesia is recognized as a sovereign state, and it has a free association with the United States. The Federated States of Micronesia are located in an area also known as Micronesia, which is made up of hundreds of small islands. Micronesia is sometimes used to refer to the Federated States, but it is also used to refer to the region as a whole. Originally part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, they adopted a constitution in 1979 and achieved independence in 1986 as part of a Compact of Free Association with the United States. Palau, the Northern Mariana Islands and the Marshall Islands chose not to participate. Consisting of 607 islands, the Federated States extend for 1,800 miles east of the Philippines. The capital of the Federated States is Palikir, located on the island of Pohnpei. The official currency of the island is the U.S. dollar. The federation is comprised of four states. These include: - Chuuk (capital - Weno) The largest state by population is Chuuk, with 53,595 citizens. Pohnpei is next with 34,486 residents, and Yap is third with 11,241. The smallest state is Kosrae, with only 7,686 citizens. There are seven official languages in the Federated States. These are: English, Ulithian, Woleaian, Yapese, Pohnpeian, Kosraean and Chuukese. At least seven other languages are also spoken on the islands. The major economic forces on the island are farming and fishing. While the island tries to promote tourism, their remote location often serves as an obstacle, coupled with a lack of adequate facilities. The primary source of revenue comes from economic aid from the United States. For example, the U.S. spent $1.3 billion on the islands from 1986 through 2001. |
