Myanmar GamblingBurmese Gambling LawsMyanmar, formerly known as Burma, allows casino gambling and state-sponsored lottery games. The Burmese government is more permissive than authorities in its neighboring countries, which has caused several cross-border betting incidents in the last few years. There have been incidents involving the Chinese government and Thai sports books, where gambling operations would set up just across the border into Myanmar. Illegal lottery games are also rampant, winners usually being determined by some but not all of the numbers of the state-run legal lottery tickets. This page gives a list of Myanmar casinos, lottery games and sports betting, as well as some of the local flavor of Burmese gaming. Burma Casinos ExtraThe Andaman Club is known to encourage gambling junkets to their casino, so you might search for bargain prices when visiting the Thaytay area. Mong la CasinosMong La was briefly a major casino gambling destination for Chinese citizens, who would cross the China-Myanmar border for betting excursions. Years before, the Chinese government allowed the Mong La casinos, hoping the jobs along the border would keep the locals from engaging in drug trafficking to make money. But they did not anticipate the craze for gambling this would occur, or the money that would flow across the border to Myanmar. Eventually, the daughter of a Chinese central official lost over $168,000 in a weekend gambling trip, which caused the Chinese officials to look closer at the casinos. This led to Operation Blue Arrow, where Chinese troops bunched at the border and surrounded the five local casinos. The soldiers also kept Chinese from crossing the border. The Chinese Liberation Army demanded the official's daughter's money be refunded and called for all Chinese employees of the casinos to return to China. Since 2003, the Monglar economy has crashed. At the height of its popularity, it was estimated by one source that 6 large casinos and over 50 gambling businesses existed in Mong La. Note that Chinese citizens were not allowed to gamble in China since the communists took over in the late 1940's. Sports Betting in MyanmarMyanmar has a more permissive attitude towards sports book and sports betting than neighboring Thailand. In 2006, Thai bookmakers were reported to be crossing the border into Myanmar to take bets on the 2006 World Cup. These bookies set up shop in Tachilek, a gambling city thought to have five smaller casinos. Though most forms of gaming are illegal in Thailand, the Thai people love to wager on their favorite pastime, football (soccer). Myanmar LotteryMyanmar's people have a national lottery, but many prefer to play in the local illegal lotteries which sometimes take on a holiday atmosphere. Some Burmese people have been known to consult with the local Buddhist monks for advice on choosing lottery numbers. Government lottery entries usually cost around 25 cents to buy a ticket, while the illegal "na lone ti" tickets cost as little as $0.025. The monthly illegal lottery drawing take place from the third to the ninth day of every month, so that small prizes are announced for seven days straight. Apparently, the na lone ti lottery uses only two digits, which correspond to numbers drawn in the official government lotteries. This means that many people can win the smaller prizes of the illegal lotteries. The first official online lottery of Myanmar is the Aung Bar Lay. This site actually has a link for players to use tarot to find their lucky numbers. This being said, playing the illegal lottery can be a dangerous game. The Burmese government tracks down illegal gambling rings, and has even been known to arrest up to 30 police officers when a raid did not go as planned. Official suspected these hapless officers might have tipped off the gambling operators. |
