Nauruan Anti-Gambling Laws

Gambling is not legal in Nauru. While this may always change in the future, the country’s slumping economy and dependence on foreign aid make it unlikely to do so in the short term.

Nauru Information

Officially known as the Republic of Nauru, it is an island nation located in the Micronesian South Pacific. About one-tenth the size of Washington, DC, Nauru’s closest neighbor is Banaba Island. Covering just 8.1 square miles, Nauru is the world’s smallest island nation and smallest independent republic. It is also the only republic state currently in existence without a capital.

The nation was originally inhabited by Polynesian and Micronesian people, but it was annexed by Germany in last half of the 19th century. Occupied by Japan during World War II, Nauru became independent in 1968.

Beginning in 1907, the island came to rely on the mining and export of phosphate to support their economy. The phosphate deposits were eventually exhausted, however, hurting both the wealth and environment of the island.

In the 1990s, Nauru tried to recoup their losses by becoming a center for money laundering and tax havens. It is estimated that the Russian mafia funneled over $70 billion dollars to the island.

In 2001, Nauru began to accept financial aid from the Australian government. In exchange, Nauru houses a detention center which processes those seeking asylum in Australia. Australia has also taken on the responsibility of defending the island in times of trouble. The official currency of Nauru is the Australian Dollar.

It is estimated that 13,048 people live on the island. While Nauruan is the official language, English is the language commonly used in the government and commercial sectors.

The nation is divided into 14 administrative districts. They are:

- Buada
- Denigomodu
- Ewa
- Ijuw
- Meneng
- Nibok
- Uaboe
- Yaren

95% of employed Nauruans work for the government, but there is also a 90% unemployment rate. The nation has no personal taxes.

The most popular sport on the island is Australian rules football, and the country has a league with seven teams. Other popular games include sailing, tennis, soccer, softball and cricket.
