Niue GamblingNieuan Gambling InformationBy Reno Rollins Whilst it is unknown whether or not gambling is legal in Niue, there are no lotteries, racetracks or casinos. The island’s small population, isolated location and dependence on foreign aid makes it ill-suited for involvement in the gambling industry. Niue FactsLocated in the South Pacific Ocean, Niue is an island nation often known as the “Rock of Polynesia.” It is a self-governing country, but it also has a free association with New Zealand which allows that country to conduct most of their foreign relations. One of the world’s largest coral islands, Niue can be found in a triangle between Samoa, the Cook Islands and Tonga. The capital of Niue is Alofi. While residents of the nation are mainly Polynesian, both English and the Niuean language are spoken. Most inhabitants of the island are bilingual. The island was first sighted by Captain James Cook in 1774. He tried to land on the island, but the local inhabitants turned him away. He dubbed the island “Savage Island,” as the natives appeared to have blood on their teeth. In actuality, this was red banana. The economy of Niue is rather small when compared to other nations. In 2000, their GDP was estimated to be around $7.6 million. The New Zealand Dollar is the official currency of Niue. Niue’s main source of income has been foreign aid from New Zealand. Fishing, agriculture and tourism are the island’s three main economic sectors. In 2006, tourism generated $1.6 million in profits for Niue. The population of Niue continues to drop, as many residents emigrate to New Zealand. The peak of the island’s population came in 1966, when over 5,000 people resided on the island. By 2007, it had dropped to 1,492. Rugby union is the most popular sport on the island. |
