Gambling in Saint HelenaSt. Helenian Gaming InformationBy Reno Rollins While gambling may not be illegal on Saint Helena, it is impractical. The island nation is one of the most isolated spots in the world, with access available only by boat or military aircraft out of England. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Saint Helena lacks any organized form of gambling. Facts About Saint HelenaSaint Helena is a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic Ocean. Besides the island of Saint Helena, it also includes Tristan da Cunha and Ascension Island. Saint Helena is best known for being the final place of exile for Napoleon Bonaparte from 1815 until his death in 1821 (his body was moved to France in 1840). One of the most isolated places in the world, Saint Helena is 1200 miles from the nearest major landmass. There is no commercial airport at this time, although the British government announced plans to build one in 2005. It was originally expected to be completed by 2010, but this date has been pushed back to 2012. The island was first discovered in 1502 by a Portuguese navigator names Joao da Nova and named after Helena of Constantinople. At the time, the island appeared uninhabited. In 1633, the Dutch Republic made a claim on the island, although no records exist that they ever occupied it. In 1657, the British East India Company fortified and settled Saint Helena. The population of the island is under four-thousand, with the residents being comprised of Black/Africans, European and Chinese bloodlines. In recent times, many residents have relocated to either the United Kingdom or the Falkland Islands. The British Overseas Territories Act of 2002 granted full British citizenship to all residents. Saint Helena has the largest proportion of Jehovah’s Witnesses of any country or territory in the world. One in thirty is a member of the faith, for a total of 129. The economy of Saint Helena is weak, and it mostly relies on financial aid from London. Some tourists do come to see the site of Napoleon’s imprisonment, as well as enjoy the nation’s great sport fishing. The islands also issue and sell their own postage stamps to generate additional revenue. The official currency of the island is the Saint Helenian pound, which is comparable to the Pound Sterling. The local government produces their own banknotes and coins. |
