Biloxi GamblingCasino Information for Biloxi, Mississippi
All of that changed in the 1990's, when a perennially bad economy forced the lawmakers of Mississippi to consider the legalization of casino gambling. Casino Gambling Comes to MississippiThe Mississippi State Legislature enacted a law to allow casino gambling in 1990. By 1992, gambling was legalized on the riverfronts of Mississippi. Since that time, casino revenues have become a major part of the Mississippi economy. Note that Mississippi had the lowest household per capita income in the United States. In the 1990's, casinos grew up in towns along the Gulf Coast and along the banks of the Mississippi River. Mississippi cities with casinos are Gulfport, Biloxi, Bay St. Louis, Greenville, Vicksburg, Natchez and Tunica. Until the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, Mississippi was the second largest gambling state in the Union, behind only Nevada and ahead of New Jersey. Tunica remains the third largest gambling city in the United States. Casino Gambling in BiloxiThe Biloxi area in Harrison County is the second largest gambling area in Mississippi. Because of its proximity to the beaches, Biloxi had long been a beachfront resort town. When gambling began in earnest in 1992, a rush began to turn Biloxi into a center for casinos. Several casinos opened up in the next few years. It wasn't until 1997, when the Imperial Palace Casino, Resort and Spa opened, that Biloxi became a major stopover for casinos. The Imperial Palace (IP) had a sister casino in Las Vegas, because it was a gambling establishment on a major scale. Beau RivageBeau Rivage was another watermark in the history of Biloxi casinos. The Beau Rivage Waterfront Casino opened in 1999 as a partnership between the Golden Nugget and the Mirage of Las Vegas. The inclusion of casinos like the Beau Rivage and the Imperial Palace represented the appearance of the Las Vegas establishment in southern Mississippi. When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 2005, Beau Rivage sustained extensive damage. By spring of 2006 the Beau Rivage Casino reopened, including the addition of a new golf course. Hurricane Katrina only temporarily hurt the gaming revenues for Biloxi. In November 2007, the "coast" casinos reported a record $100 million in gross gaming revenues. Gulfport shares the role of county seat with Biloxi in Harrison County, Mississippi. The two make up one metropolitan area, so it is also mentionable that Gulfport is home to the Island View Casino Resort. Hard Rock Casino BiloxiThe Hard Rock Casino was set to open within days of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. The casino was eventually destroyed by the water surge, and there were questions if and when the Hard Rock would ever open. The Hard Rock opened in early 2007, christened with a concert by Kid Rock. Mississippi LotteryLike certain other states with major casino operations, Mississippi is one of the small minority of U.S. states which does not have a state lottery. There is no lotto to play in Biloxi. Biloxi BingoThe Biloxi-Gulfport area has at least 12 standalone bingo halls. The Biloxi casinos do not have their own bingo halls. A handful of the Biloxi casinos offer keno. Biloxi Pari-Mutuel BettingBiloxi-area casinos do not operate their own sports books or race books. These casinos offer poker, slot machine, video poker machines and most of the major table games, but you are not likely to find horse track bets being offered. |

By the 1850's, Biloxi offered nice hotels for
visitors and tourists who wanted to vacation on the gulf
coast. Biloxi would remain a favorite for vacationers
for generations, though gambling was not an option.|
